BIO

Professor Amazigo is a Public Health specialist, a Medical Parasitologist and a Social Inclusion and Development Professional, with a bias in Community-Directed Interventions (CDI) for the control and elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD). Her work contributed to the improvement of the lives and livelihoods of millions of African people suffering from onchocerciasis (river blindness), a highly disfiguring and stigma inducing disease. She pioneered the community-driven approach to delivering treatments and was responsible for a fundamental shift in global efforts to tackle the disease, expanding beyond prevention and control. Retired Director of the World Health Organization African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control, she is now the CEO of Pan-African Community Initiative on Education and Health (PACIEH), an NGO that promotes community-managed school feeding, school eye health, deworming of school age children and feeding programme in resource poor settings, and advisor to Anambra State Government on education
