BIO
Nina T. Castillo-Carandang’s career as a sociologist in the University of the Philippines began in the agricultural sciences campus (Los Baños) before she joined the health sciences campus (Manila) & went into the fields of health social science, clinical epidemiology, & global health. She has investigated sociocultural dimensions of health & health care — the perceptions of laypersons, patients, health care providers, policymakers, & how such can affect health-seeking behavior, clinical practice, as well as policy (clinical, public health). Her current work looks at different facets of quality of life, & the Filipinos’ search for Kagalingan (well-being, happiness, & health), & living well & being well amidst cardiovascular diseases, malaria, tuberculosis, COVID-19, & asthma & allergies on the lives of Filipino communities, families, & individuals. In addition to her work in academia, she has also been a Cross-Cultural/Diversity & Human Resources Development Consultant for various organizations.
Dr. Castillo-Carandang has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology (University of the Philippines Los Baños, Philippines), a Master of Arts major in Sociology degree (Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines), & a Master of Science in Design, Measurement & Evaluation (Clinical Epidemiology, Health Social Science) from McMaster University, Canada. Her PhD in Social Sciences & Global Health was from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
From February 2020 to April 2024 --- Nina T. Castillo-Carandang, MA, MSc, PhD has given 105 talks, media interviews on various topics (health equity, COVID-19, vaccination, etc.). She is a Member, Philippines’ Scientific Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) for Emerging & Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases (EREID SAGE) (Aug 2022 – present. On call, pro bono); and Member, Philippines’ Inter-Agency Technical Working Group on Genetically Modified Mosquitoes (Sept 2023-present. On call). Nina was a Member, WHO Social Science Working Group on COVID-19 (Aug 2020 – June 2022. pro bono); Member, Strategic Advisory Group of the WHO Foundation (May-Oct 2022. pro bono); and Member, Philippines’ National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) for COVID-19 Vaccines (Dec 2020 – July 2022. pro bono)
