Johannes Sommerfeld, Drphil, MPH, is a former WHO-TDR employee residing in Heidelberg, Germany. Between 2000 and 2017 he was Scientist and Research Manager with the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/World Health Organization Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) where he managed international research initiatives in Social, Economic and Behavioural (SEB) research, implementation research and research on community-based interventions for the control and prevention of infectious diseases of poverty. His latest assignment was Scientist, WHO Centre for Health Development, Kobe, Japan, between 2017 and 2019. Prior professional posts included Research Associate/Project Social Scientist with the Applied Diarrheal Disease Research Project (ADDR) at the Harvard Institute for International Development, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA (1992-1996) and Research Associate (Wissenschaftlicher Angestellter) at the Department of Tropical Hygiene and Public Health of Heidelberg University, Germany (1996-2000). He holds Master of Arts (MA) and PhD (Dr phil) degrees from the University of Hamburg, Germany and a Master of Public Health degree (MPH) with a focus on epidemiology and biostatistics from the University of South Florida, Tampa, USA.
