ProfessorGabriel Anabwani

Born in colonial Kenya in 1948, Dr Gabriel Anabwani - a trained paediatrician, paediatric cardiologist and clinical epidemiologist - has been involved in clinical and academic paediatrics and child health in Africa for over four decades. Since relocating from Kenya to Botswana in 1997 he has been immersed in HIV/AIDS work and was instrumental in the formulation and implementation of Botswana’s HIV Treatment and PMCT Guidelines, the first on the African continent. He served as Chair to the National HIV Treatment Guidelines Committee for ten years from 1997; and since 2003, has served as founding Executive Director of the Botswana-Baylor Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence (BBCCCOE) and as Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA. Under his leadership, the COE has received several national and international awards and recognitions in the field of HIV care, treatment and support: the Mama Africa Award (2007) for making a significant contributing towards innovative partnerships; the Vision 2016 Award (in 2010) for making a significant contribution towards achieving the goal of a compassionate and caring nation. Two COE innovations, In-reach (March 2010) and Teen-Club (Sep 2010), have been listed on the USAIDS AIDSTAR-One website as best practices. He also serves on a number of national, regional and international technical committees and boards. He has authored or co-authored over 55 articles in peer reviewed journals and published several book chapters and manuals. He is the recipient of several awards including Outstanding Contribution to HIV Medicine in Botswana (2009); IAS/Coalition for Children Affected by AIDS Prize for Excellence in Research Related to the Needs of Children Affected by AIDS (2012); and the Texas Children’s Hospital International Recognition Award for tireless compassionate dedication for building a global community of healthy children and educating health professionals throughout the world. Dr Anabwani is actively involved in clinical research and is currently Principal Investigator of a number of studies including the NIH-funded Collaborative African Genomics Network (CAfGEN). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
