Dr. Tandale worked earlier as Epidemiologist-cum-Lecturer at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College Nagpur from 2001 - 2004, immediately after completing MD (PSM) from Government Medical College, Aurangabad from 1997-2000. Dr. Tandale joined ICMR-NIV Pune as a medical scientist (Epidemiologist) in September 2004. Being the Senior Medical Scientist and Group Leader of the Epidemiology Group, his work involves outbreak preparedness and response activities including field investigations of outbreaks.

He has been involved in outbreak response for over 50 outbreaks over 15 years at ICMR-NIV. He has worked on pandemic H1N1, bird flu, Chikungunya, Dengue, Kyasanur Forest disease, West Nile, Chandipura, acute encephalitis, COVID-19, etc. He has also undertaken surveillance research, seroepidemiological surveys and field studies on outbreak-prone, vaccine-preventable, endemic and emerging viruses. Field evaluations of vaccines are also undertaken for safety, immunogenicity, efficacy, coverage and effectiveness during field use. He has also guided master’s students and trained young researchers in epidemiological skills.

Recognizing the significant and impactful research contributions made during epidemics, ICMR honoured him with awards in 2010 and 2014 for epidemiological research during outbreaks. He has also been conferred with the IAPSM Maharashtra State Oration Award in 2020. He is currently working on virus disease burden studies, their prevention and control research along with field evaluation of mobile applications for immunizations. Currently, he is working on VPDs surveillance, seroepidemiology and outbreak investigation and response, virus diseases and research prioritisation, risk mapping and hotspots of zoonotic and emerging viruses and emerging infectious diseases in different zones in India.
