Dr. Jason Ong is the recipient of the prestigious Australian National Health and Research Medical Council Sidney Sax Fellowship, which provides him 4 years of full-time funding to conduct research from 2017 to 2020. He is a sexual health physician with extensive clinical and research experience in HIV/STIs. He has a proven track record of working independently and meeting research deadlines as evidenced by his 57 publications to date in international peer-reviewed journals (including Journal of International AIDS Society, The Lancet, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Annals of Family Medicine, etc…) He has published papers on all the STIs, utilizing a wide range of methodologies including quantitative and qualitative research, infectious disease modelling, economic evaluations and discrete choice experiments. His research has influenced national policies. For example, his study on the economic evaluation of anal cancer screening, published in the Journal of International AIDS Society, has changed recommendations in both the Australian and British Sexual Health Guidelines.

He has been recognized for his contribution to sexual health research in 2016 by being the recipient of the highly competitive Australian Young Clinical Leader by the peak organization of sexual health in Australia – the Australasian Sexual Health Association. He has also received other scholarships, awards and prizes to recognize his excellence in presentation at conferences, and research.

He holds a senior position as the Special Issues Editor for an international peer-reviewed journal, Sexual Health. He has also contributed to writing Australian STI guidelines (for anal cancer screening and partner notification policies for non-gonococcal urethritis), and writing the national curriculum for Australian general practitioners (for the chapters on research and critical thinking, dermatology and procedural skills).
